About Villa Medici & Gardens
The villa has undergone significant changes throughout its history. Originally part of the 'Gardens of Lucullus', it was used as a military camp during the Byzantine Empire period.
In 1576, Cardinal Ferdinando de' Medici purchased the property and commissioned major renovations with architect Bartolomeo Ammanati.
It has been owned by the French State since the 1800s and housed the French Academy there since.
The gallery has some incredible art that was collected by the late Cardinal Ferdinando de' Medici. The collection is around 400 pieces and includes paintings, tapestries, busts and sculptures.
Architecture fans will enjoy the property for the stucco work, marble floors as well as the restorations that took place in the 17th century when the French took ownership of the property.
