About The Doria Pamphilj Gallery, Rome

Another incredible private collection owned by the noble Doria family. One of the few private collections that is open to the public in Rome, and actually located in their family home, the 'Palazzo Doria Pamphilj' (the Doria Pamphilj Palace).

With pieces on show by the likes of Caravaggio, Raphael, Titian, Velázquez, and Bernini, the collection attracts visitors from around the world. Caravaggio's "Rest on the Flight to Egypt" is on display in the gallery, as well as Velázquez's famous "Portrait of Pope Innocent X", which is of Giovanni Battista Pamphilj (of the Pamphilj family), or 'Pope Innocent X', as he was known, and is widely considered to be one of the finest portraits ever created.

The two separate noble families, the Doria's and the Pamphilj's came together through marriage and became one with Andrea IV Doria Pamphilj Landi taking both names. The family have been major art lovers and collectors for centuries and now allow the public to enjoy some of the collection.

The gallery may be lesser known amongst some of the other famous galleries in Rome, but don't let that fool you. The collection includes some of the most important and impressive pieces in the art world and is a must for art lovers. Its an acclaimed collection among 16th & 17th century art lovers.

The collection includes oil paintings, sculptures and frescoes and you will be impressed by the number of pieces on display. You must remember that the building is a family residence and when you that that into account when looking at all the art, you will be impressed. This was done on purpose - the family intended to overwhelm guests by means of showing off their wealth through their collection.
