About Mamertine Prison (History and Key Facts)
Mamertine Prison is one of Rome's ancient historical sites. The prison is next to the Roman Forum and Capitoline Hill, placing it right in the political and religious heart of Ancient Rome.
The prison served as a high-security state prison for important prisoners including enemies of the Roman state, royalty, and according to some, even saints.
The underground prison chambers consists of two main levels:
- Lower Chamber (Tullianum) - This level is believed to be the oldest part, possibly dating to the reign of Ancus Marcius
- Upper Chamber (Carcer) - Added later as an additional holding space
One of the most striking features is the absence of ground-level doors. Prisoners were lowered in through holes in the ceiling, which also meant that escaping was almost impossible.
Famous prisoners of Mamertine Prison
Several well-known historical figures were held at the prison, including:
- Jugurtha, the King of Numidia, who also reportedly died in the prison.
- Vercingetorix, the leader of the Gauls. He was defeated and imprisoned by Julius Caesar until his execution in 46 BC.
- It is also traditionally believed that Saints Peter and Paul were imprisoned here.
Legend of the Spring
A small spring can be seen in the Lower Chamber and according to legend, it miraculously appeared when Saint Peter was imprisoned there. He is said to have used it to baptise prisoners and guards. Because of this connection, it later became a place of pilgrimage.
Historians suggest a more practical explanation. The lower chamber may have been constructed to act as a cistern (water storage chamber) before being converted into a second prison chamber, and if it was built next to a water source, that would explain the spring and the presence of water.
