About the Colonna Gallery
The Colonna Gallery is home to some of the vast private art collection of the Colonna family on display in their own 'Palazzo Colonna', which is also one of the largest private palaces in Rome and dates back to the 13th century. The collection includes paintings, sculptures and decorative arts from the Renaissance to the Baroque period. It was opened to the public in the 18th century, which also makes it one of the oldest public art galleries in Rome!
The collection has been accumulated by the family over generations and includes works by renowned artists such as Pinturicchio, Carracci, Guercino, Tintoretto, Bronzino, Salvator Rosa and Guido Reni, amongst others and popular pieces include Annibale Carracci's Bean Eater, Bronzino's Venus, Cupid and Satyr, Guido Reni's St. Francis praying with two angels and Perugino's Penitent St. Jerome in the Desert. The collection is known for its diverse range of styles and periods.
The art aside, the 'Palazzo Colonna' itself is a masterpiece of architecture and you can enjoy the beautiful frescoed ceilings, grand halls, and opulent decorations that characterize the palace. The gallery takes several rooms in the palace, each of which is also covered with frescos as well as architectural details. You Can Enjoy the 'Hall of Landscapes' which is lined with rural compositions of Gaspard Dughet and magnificent Marble Columns. The 'Hall of Apotheosis of Martin V' has an incredible ceiling canvas by Benedetto Luti. The 'Throne Room', 'Chapel Room' and the 'Tapestry Room', which is home to intricate woven designs dating back to the 1600's.
