Which entrance to the Vatican should I use?

The Vatican may be the smallest country in the world, but it still only has two main entrances, that on Via della Conciliazone and that on Viale Vaticano. If you would like to start your tour at St. Peter's Basilica, we suggest the Via della Conciliazone as your best entrance. If you would rather see the Vatican Museums first, then Viale Vaticano is probably your best entrance.

A: No - you do not need your passport to enter the Vatican, you simply enter via one of its two entrances, Via della Conciliazone or Viale Vaticano.

The collection was started by Pope Julius II in the early 16th century when he acquired the famous piece, Laocoon and His Sons and the collection then grew from there to what is is today, full of priceless pieces of art and sculptures including works by Caravaggio including his piece the Deposition of Christ, which is on display in the Pinacoteca. Other artists with work on display include Van Gogh, Rodin, Raphael and Bernini, and of course Michelangelo with his incredible ceiling in the Sistine Chapel.

Q: When is the best time to visit the Vatican Museums?

A: Being one of Rome's most popular tourist attractions, the Vatican Museums are rarely quiet but low season is classed as October - April so can generally be quieter during that time. Q: What can I wear to visit the Vatican Museums?

A: With the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel being a religious location, they don't like revealing clothes and low-cut clothes, sleeveless tops and see-through clothing aren't allowed and you will also likely be asked to remove hats on arrival. Any baggage such as backpacks or suitcases will need to be left in their cloakroom as well.

About Vatican Museums

The Vatican Museums & Sistine Chapel are one of the biggest tourist attractions in Rome and they welcome around 5 million visitors a year, which works out to around 25,000 visitors per day.

The Vatican Museums are also home to one of the largest art collections in the world which spans multiple periods including ancient Rome along with Egyptian artifacts and religious objects. The collection also contains a significant number of paintings from classic master pieces to modern day pieces.

The Sistine Chapel forms part of the Vatican Museums tour and with it, the incredible ceiling, which was painted by Michelangelo in the 16^thcentury, and shows his interpretation of the story of creation and the great flood amongst other scenes.

Michelangelo also painted the scene of the ‘Last Judgement’ behind the alter. The Sistine Chapel, as well as Michelangelo’s incredible work, is also home to works by Ghirlandaio, Botticelli, Perugino as well as Pinturicchio and others.

As well as being home to incredible art, the Sistine Chapel is also an incredibly important location as its where the cardinals meet for conclave when they are electing a new pope, which is identified by white smoke from the chimney.
